Â
This post will serve as the actual chat post. If you will not be able to attend the chat, you can still ask questions of both John and Barbary. They will answer them during the chat itself.

I will finish the post at that time.
However this will give you some things to research before the live chat.
So, I will ask John my question now.
John, how did you first know that you wished to write poetry?
We will miss you but we know you must be exhausted after everything you have been through lately.
My first poem written for and posted on Gather: (in iambic pentameter)
So silently Spring settles all about
As seeds in Spring seek Summer’s sun to sprout
The sparrow, sweet Svetlana shares with glee
Her sentiment of serendipity
At sensing love and such serenity
Surrendered love to seagull ‘cross the sea
O splendid Spring, anticipated long
Please stay and settle here where you belong.
Thank you very much John for answering my question. I love your first poem here, it's very swell. :)
I am sorry you missed the chat but I imagine life is pretty hectic for you and your family right now. Glad you got to come back and read the transcript.
I miss you .
Grab a stick on the way to the campfire. We will have marshmellows to roast, hot chocolate and bring your own lawn chair. We are going to sit around the campfire and listen to John and Barbary recite poetry all night tonight. :)
Sounds fun, doesn't it?
We all going to be sitting around the campfire listening to John and Barbary recite poetry all night. :)
The transcripts are always here for your convience. :) Glad you got to come back.
We will miss you but the transcript will be here for your viewing pleasure anytime you are able to read it. :)
That is so cool that they are scheduled together then. :)
JOHN: Do you prefer to write poetry rather than prose? Or do you enjoy writing prose as much as poetry? If you prefer to write poetry over prose, do you also prefer to read others' poetry over prose? Or does it depend on who's doing the writing and what is written?
JOHN: Do you like to get in any specific state or mind before writing poetry? Do you keep a notebook handy? Or just scribble in ideas when you can? Do you write longhand for poetry?
JOHN: Do some of your poems take longer than others? How important do you consider the revision process?
What an adorable anecdote about Professor Walther. I have an image in my head, but it is not quite the same as those choices.
Oh my - your second comment - about the poem for the nurse. That shows the mark of a superb writer and a superb human being.
Your anecdotes are wonderful.
Is revision difficult whenm you revise, as you did on the poem for the wedding reception? or does that come out instaneously, as well? And when you revise, are you looking for technical revisions or inspirational revisions or both?
BARBARY: I know you wrote the Journal of the Snow Goose, your incredible travelogue of your voyages around the world. There is a lot of poetry in the Snow Goose. Were you also writing poetry during that era?
BARBARY: I take it you prefer writing poetry now, rather than prose. But maybe my perception is not accurate.
BARBARY: You mentioned once that your more recent poetry differs from some earlier poetry. Would you care to expand upon this? In what way?
BARBARY: Do you keep a notebook handy or do you keep ideas/poems/ snippets in your head? Do you write every day?
BARBARY: What inspires you most in terms of writing poetry? People? Bill? Nature? Family? Seems like all of these and more.
I think I wrote one poem as a child. When I was 35 I enrolled in a poetry class. Every night Bill would come home to a new poem. Not always to his liking. :)
During the seven Snow Goose years I concentrated on sailing articles.
In real life I am a person of few words, so writing of poetry suits me.
Estuary is more gritty than No Name Harbor. I'm more gritty. Older. Seeking honesty.
If I don't write something down immediately it is gone, gone, gone.
Bill inspires me. We are polar opposites. Injustice shakes me, the homeless, animal abuse. Beauty and the questions of metaphysics are topics. I have regrets. Depression. Famil, friends and much more.
Well, you must have found a wellspring within yourself where the poetry dwelled and was screaming to get out. I do think poetry begins to ache in us as we get beyond our teens...into 20s or 30s...
I gathered you were a person of few words. I admire that. People tell me to ... button my lip...
I am the same way. Have to write it or lose it.
I thought you had referred once to Estuary being Grittier than NNH. I like Estuary a LOT. Grittier is essential in life. Because yes, honesty is what we are all looking for in life.
Bill inspires you. That is very sweet. I can see how opposites inspire...........
Wonderful comments, Barbary. Thank you very much.
Interesting question.
I have never heard that before, either. Ever since I started interviewing people for ... newspapers... I have always asked this question and always get unique responses.............
thanks so much.
For me a poetry won't appear before its time. So I'm probably right on schedule.
"For me a poetry won't appear before its time. So I'm probably right on schedule. "
Wow. That is beautiful....
will try to make it.
Was going to add some questions but I think Kathryn covered them all.
And we know John is a wonderful poet.
There is not going to be a book given away tonight. This chat is purely for pleasure. Grab a mug of cocoa, a stick to roast marshmallows with, a chair and we will sit around the campfire and listen to John and Barbary recite poetry to us all night. :)
You can view the transcript from the live chat with Barbary from last year by clicking on the following link.
It has a wealth of information in it that will open your eyes to all the talent this lady possess.
Transcript Of Live Chat With Author Barbary Chaapel
John Beck
And
Barbary Chaapel
Will begin in 45 minutes. If you will not be able to make the chat, just post your questions in the comment area of this post and they will answer them during the chat.
Barbary--do you find, with the changing technology, that publishing is different than it used to be? If so, in what way?
John--do you hope to take your poetry beyond publishing on Gather?
Isn't the 14th Poem in your pocket day? That sounds like so much fun. I have heard people on Gather say that poetry is a dying art. I disagree, I see it evolving beyond the traditional poetry but I see it growing none the less.
For that reason, I held my annual themed-Club meeting a week early.
I am waiting until after tomorrow to schedule anymore this month because of surgery thought.
I have yet to decide whether or not I want to publish outside Gather. I had considered submitting to a small paper which is published in Door County and distributed free in businesses throughout the county in the tourist season.
My life revolves around writing poetry. I don't like the rest of the process.
Yes, publishing is evolving. I could see this in the span of my 3 books.
Does one want to hold a book in hand? Or scroll?
Making National Poetry Month special in any way?
Hello, Katryn and Veronica.
WV has an unusual number of people in the arts, so
there is always something great to attend. Inspiring.
Imagine we are all sitting around the campfire. WE are on rocks, broken down trees and lawn chairs.
We have hot chocolate to drink. There is a tea kettle on a rack in the campfire.
WE have sticks to roast marshmallows with.
Now we are all going to have a wonderful time chatting with John and Barbary in the glow of the campfire.
Can you imagine that (Just for tonight)?
I want you to smell the woods, feel the gentle breeze and the warmth of the campfire as you listen to the poems, you can hear the water gently flowing downstream in the river just in front of where were are sitting.
I want to bring back the togetherness that comes from campfires, stories and poetry, if only for one night.
I brought blankets. :) I will sit in the back with you. :)
I would like to thank each of you for attending this chat tonight. Just get comfortable and have fun chatting. The time goes by rapidly in these chats.
Welcome to the live chat with Author/Poet John Beck & Author/Poet Barbary Chaapel
Thank You for joining us.
Edward is here to answer your questions.
Welcome Barbary & John!
Remember to keep refreshing the page to see all the latest comments.
We are so glad you accepted the offer to chat about poetry with us.
Hello, Connie,
Thank you so much for hosting this chat.
And hello, John, are you there?
Are you working on another book right now?
I applaud this author chat for having the opportunity to read poetry from two great people.
I'm here drinking my Coke Zero just finished watching America IDol ( learning voting does matter the most in staying in the competition).
Now I'm in the mood for great conversations with everyone.
No I do not make it a point to dabble in poetry. I know the last time I wrote a poem was for high school in an English class. Today, I have no idea what I wrote.
I have noticed that John tends to spice his poetry up with just about any variety.
I am making plans for lunch with Beth while we hide out on Tuesday to celebrate her birthday since it's the next day anyway
I think we may just have to get up around 5am for that ;)
Don't make me have to pick you up! I won't be gentle. LOL
"George Washington Bridge,
George Washington Bridge,
Washington, Washington, Washington, Washington,
George Washington Bridge"
no idea how to describe the tune...I'll see if I can find it
Do you write poetry? I think I saw a question from you up next to the top about writing for children. Is that something you are considering?
I have noticed that you can write just about any kind of poem. What is your secret to shifting gears so rapidly?
Haiku
Villanelle
Pantoum
Cinquain
Rubaiyat
Decastich
Acrostic
List poem
Kyrielle
Rondeau
Sestina
Tritina
Parallelismus membrorum
Than bauk

Abecedarian
Fibonacci poem
Triolet
Nonnet
Dramatic monologue
Ghazal
Luc bat
I just read up about them and then try my hand, sometimes successfully and sometimes I learn what I've done wrong.
ARE ALL OF THOSE DIFFERENT TYPES OF POETRY?
I HAD NO IDEA!!!
NOW I HAVE TO DO MORE RESEARCH! YOU JUST WANT TO KEEP ME BUSY DON'T YOU?
I sorta stay down at the bottom to make sure everyone gets welcomed properly.
If I remember right, you were living on a boat for one of your books. What is your inspiration for the poetry you are currently writing.
Did you remove some of your poems from Gather?
I looked and could not find many to spotlight in this post.
Should we be directed to your blog instead?
You are not planning on leaving Gather all together are you?
I plan a break-out soon!
After a week or two I remove poems I may want to publish in a book.
There should have been 4 published on Gather from Estuary.
Goodness, I couldn't leave Gather. So many wonderful friends here.
I have not noticed you at too many of the chats. I am really glad you are here. This is the second year I have been hosting them and I love doing it.
My mind has not been thinking clearly latey. I fear I misspelled your last name in one of the Today posts. I am so sorry.
I am so glad you could make it. Do you write poetry as well as stories?
It is so good to see you.
In each poetry book I chose about 50 from a 100 poems written.
I divided the sections with "like" poems in each.
Are you writing a book...hope so!
{{{{{{{ BARBARY }}}}}}}
Hughes Satellite isn't so fast as they advertise.
Can you just sit around a campfire and close your mind to the sounds, scents, and feel of nature, then make up a poem about it on a whim?
Sitting round a campfire
Brightening our day
When I was a teen, I dabbled in poetry and sketching. I would take my sketch pad to the woods. There was an amazing mossy area about a half mile into the woods and I loved to just lay there and sketch or write poetry. The scent of nature has always evoked my mind to the simple things in life.
The sights, sounds and scents of nature has an amazing effect on my mind.
Welcome. It is good to see you. Did I read in one of John's recent posts that he had met you in person or did I dream that?
Sometimes when we write, it is hard to tell the fiction from the nonfiction. LOL
Meditation on poetry around the campfire. This seems so simple and yet so hard to do.
Have you ever made up a poem in this moment?
Do you tend to write poetry from all the varieties that exist?
The words you use, and the way you put them together....is this a particular style, or how did you come to say what you say the way you said it? Did you learn in your poetry class to do this or is this a natural speech of yours? The words you use in poetry, are you also likely to use them in daily life?
I believe I just write - the way I think - maybe it is the way I talk, too.
In poetry classes appreciation was taught, sentences parsed, critiqued - those were the main subjects covered.
Did I answer your question?
Do you write poetry?
My pets definitely have figured into poems.
Here we sit like birds in the wilderness
birds in the wilderness
birds in the wilderness
Here we sit like birds in the wilderness
Waiting for Barbary to come
Waiting for Barbary to come
Waiting for Barbary to come
Here we sit like Birds in the wilderness
Waiting for Barbary to come...
Now all together one, two three....
I went back up to make sure you were ok. LOL It is easy to get overwelmed by all the questions in these chats but they are so fun to do and so exciting to do them in real time then go back to read the transcript.
I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. As you can see, many people enjoy your poetry.
When did poetry evolve into something other than a rhyme?
Has it been evolving more over the last few years or am I older than I thought I was?
Are your poems published anywhere beside on Gather?
Are you considering publishing a book of poetry?
Definitely, enter contests. Lots of them. Especially the ones with no fees.
Even though we only live a couple counties apart, we have never met in person.
I sent her book, Estuary, to 2 friends and they loved it.
One of my first Gather posts was a citizen report of Sago.
I set glued to the TV during the entire ordeal at SAGO. I was never so disappointed in The CNN reporter. He is the one that spread the rumor that they were alive. I saw it was it was happening. I have never trusted him after that. I refuse to watch him on CNN. He did not verify his words before he repeated them over and over.
You must love the outdoors too. :)
those biting things.
Thanks for posting songs, Jan.
I don't know why but I was in the mood for a campfire chat tonight. LOL The owl would have been too scared to dare make a noise with this group of gather members anyway. LOL
Have never looked into one of these chats before, but I saw that Barbary Chaapel's, Bad Boys, was going to be discussed, so I thought I'd check it out. (Anyway, I thought I'd let you know I was here.) Hope all is well. Take care. :)
Barbary is around here somewhere but we can't find her. She was here and now she is gone.
You can leave Barbary a question about her poem and she will answer it when she gets down here.
I really do keep answering and it posts.
Yes, please ask here or send me Gather mail. I'll be happy to answer.
It's a lovely poem, and not wanting the kind of man who would spread his coat across a puddle for you resonated with me. I love the way you ended it. Also brought back a lot of memories of when I used to listen to Phoebe Snow.
The photo with my poem is, of course, my husband, the original bad boy. :)
Both books of poetry question relationships. It is a favorite topic, and I try to write with honesty and candor.
So nice to chat with you here, Sue.
Ya know the mannerism of men have changed over the years. I mean it is so cool to watch teenage girls as they see my husband gently guide me across the parking lot and then open my door for me.
I wonder when men quit respecting women as they once did. I am blessed with a man who still respects me as a woman. It makes me feel special.
There are only 10 minutes left in this chat. Make sure to get your questions posted before it is too late.
There are only 5 minutes left in this chat. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for attending. Thanks for all your questions. Hope each of you have a wonderful night.
This sure did fly by.
This was a good chat.
Two very kind people.
Thanks, Jan and Lynn. I loved seeing you here.
It is always great to be in the middle of the chats for various reasongs. Then to come back the next day and read the transcript. If you just read the transcript, you miss the "action and thrill of it all."
These live chats have really increased in popularity over over the last year. I have been hosting them since the Jan 2010 and I can see how musth people are enjoying them while they are occuring. But like you said, it is also a great benefit to reading the transcripst.
You can always help the authors in these chats by purchasing their book or by asking your local library to get them for you. I am sure the authors will appreciate it.
Barbary has three books publisehd. You can reall about them in the above post.
I feel confident that John will have a book out. I do now know if he is working on one of now but he has the talent and I feel certain he will find that his talent can be shared by publishing.
I need to leave a bit early tonight. I have to go the hospital. My husband just came to get me. Have a wonderful night.
I will be out of town all day tomorrow getting my Pre-Op done.
