This post will serve as the official chat post. It is not completed but out internet went out. I am doing the best I can do with my iPhone. They said the internet will be up and running in a couple hours.

I will finish the post at that time.

However this will give you some things to research before the live chat.

I hope you all have fun chatting this evening. I am just plain exhausted these days, so I won't be there.
So, I will ask John my question now.
John, how did you first know that you wished to write poetry?
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 8:38pm UTC
Angela,

We will miss you but we know you must be exhausted after everything you have been through lately.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:25pm UTC
Angela, I enjoyed poetry in school and in books. I used to write a poem, usually a sonnet or an epic poem, only on special occasions until I joined Gather.

My first poem written for and posted on Gather: (in iambic pentameter)

So silently Spring settles all about
As seeds in Spring seek Summer’s sun to sprout
The sparrow, sweet Svetlana shares with glee
Her sentiment of serendipity
At sensing love and such serenity
Surrendered love to seagull ‘cross the sea
O splendid Spring, anticipated long
Please stay and settle here where you belong.
Angela A. Apr 8, 2011, 7:30pm UTC
I ended up having to go the store this night, go figure eh? And, we were out till almost 9:10 p.m. Whew, now that's exhausting.

Thank you very much John for answering my question. I love your first poem here, it's very swell. :)
Connie C. Apr 9, 2011, 6:40pm UTC
Angela,

I am sorry you missed the chat but I imagine life is pretty hectic for you and your family right now. Glad you got to come back and read the transcript.

I miss you .
Angela A. Apr 9, 2011, 8:03pm UTC
Yes, it has been rather tough lately with the extra hours for me at work. But, at least I'm getting extra money, which is what we need.

JOHN: At what age did you start writing poetry? I mean, did you start on Gather, or before Gather? If before Gather, have you always written poetry or did it come at a specific time in your life? (Like during med school, after med school, etc)

JOHN: Do you prefer to write poetry rather than prose? Or do you enjoy writing prose as much as poetry? If you prefer to write poetry over prose, do you also prefer to read others' poetry over prose? Or does it depend on who's doing the writing and what is written?

JOHN: Do you like to get in any specific state or mind before writing poetry? Do you keep a notebook handy? Or just scribble in ideas when you can? Do you write longhand for poetry?

JOHN: Do some of your poems take longer than others? How important do you consider the revision process?

JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:02pm UTC
Kathryn, The late Professor George Walther of then Lawrence College, now Lawrence University, used to promote poetry in an address titled, Pegasus Prancing. In it he quoted the line, “...He sits at home with quiet eyes...” Then he would ask a series of questions like “Is he smoking a cigarette or a pipe?” “Does he have a fox terrier or an Irish setter?” “Is he wearing a white shirt and tie or a wool shirt?” etc. It was amazing how unanimously people agreed in their vision of this person based upon those few words. George, as a college student, sat on the bank of the river writing poetry but he was not ridiculed because he was a star football player. That impressed me.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:03pm UTC
Kathryn, Before I joined Gather, I only wrote poems for special occasions. For example, I wrote an epic poem in trochaic tetrameter for a retirement party for our friend. There was not a dry eye in the room. Also I wrote a ballad-like poem with repeating last line for a party for a nurse who had been pushed out of her position. She tried to read it, choked up, handed it to her daughter who had the same reaction, so I read it and the nurse bawled out loud. I wrote both a sonnet and an epic poem for our 25th anniversary (2012 will be our 50th!).
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:05pm UTC
Kathryn, I guess I've been more inspired to broaden my poetry on Gather. Otherwise I'm not sure if I have a preference. I love to tell stories, inherited from my dad and grandfather, so when I comment, it's often with an anecdote.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:07pm UTC
Kathryn, many of my poems nearly write themselves. The occasionally there's one which I struggle over. I wrote a long, humorous poem for a wedding reception not long ago and revised it every day for days.
Kathryn Flynn Apr 7, 2011, 9:35pm UTC
John,

What an adorable anecdote about Professor Walther. I have an image in my head, but it is not quite the same as those choices.

Oh my - your second comment - about the poem for the nurse. That shows the mark of a superb writer and a superb human being.

Your anecdotes are wonderful.

Is revision difficult whenm you revise, as you did on the poem for the wedding reception? or does that come out instaneously, as well? And when you revise, are you looking for technical revisions or inspirational revisions or both?
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:52pm UTC
Kathryn, it depends upon the poem. Sometimes it's revisions to improve the sound or nuances of meaning. Sometimes I'll start with a number of lines from which to choose, then line them up and revise them to say what I want to say in the way that sounds the best.

BARBARY: I am curious as to whether you wrote poetry as a girl or earlier in your life, such as when your children were young.

BARBARY: I know you wrote the Journal of the Snow Goose, your incredible travelogue of your voyages around the world. There is a lot of poetry in the Snow Goose. Were you also writing poetry during that era?

BARBARY: I take it you prefer writing poetry now, rather than prose. But maybe my perception is not accurate.

BARBARY: You mentioned once that your more recent poetry differs from some earlier poetry. Would you care to expand upon this? In what way?

BARBARY: Do you keep a notebook handy or do you keep ideas/poems/ snippets in your head? Do you write every day?

BARBARY: What inspires you most in terms of writing poetry? People? Bill? Nature? Family? Seems like all of these and more.

Granny Janny Apr 7, 2011, 9:03pm UTC
great questions!
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
Hello, Kathryn...

I think I wrote one poem as a child. When I was 35 I enrolled in a poetry class. Every night Bill would come home to a new poem. Not always to his liking. :)

During the seven Snow Goose years I concentrated on sailing articles.

In real life I am a person of few words, so writing of poetry suits me.

Estuary is more gritty than No Name Harbor. I'm more gritty. Older. Seeking honesty.

If I don't write something down immediately it is gone, gone, gone.

Bill inspires me. We are polar opposites. Injustice shakes me, the homeless, animal abuse. Beauty and the questions of metaphysics are topics. I have regrets. Depression. Famil, friends and much more.
Kathryn Flynn Apr 7, 2011, 9:40pm UTC
Barbary,

Well, you must have found a wellspring within yourself where the poetry dwelled and was screaming to get out. I do think poetry begins to ache in us as we get beyond our teens...into 20s or 30s...

I gathered you were a person of few words. I admire that. People tell me to ... button my lip...

I am the same way. Have to write it or lose it.

I thought you had referred once to Estuary being Grittier than NNH. I like Estuary a LOT. Grittier is essential in life. Because yes, honesty is what we are all looking for in life.

Bill inspires you. That is very sweet. I can see how opposites inspire...........

Wonderful comments, Barbary. Thank you very much.

Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:23pm UTC
Always good to talk with you, Kathyn. Thanks for all the questions - very intuitive.

JOHN: If you had your life to do all over again, what would you change, if anything? Would you have devoted more time to poetry? (as if that is possible to do in med school and medical practice?)
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:09pm UTC
Kathryn, I suppose that if anyone were truly and honestly introspective they would change some things. I can recall some things I have done or failed to do for which I am sorry or embarrassed. That said, I wouldn't change the overall direction of my life.
Interesting question.
Kathryn Flynn Apr 7, 2011, 9:29pm UTC
"I can recall some things I have done or failed to do for which I am sorry or embarrassed. That said, I wouldn't change the overall direction of my life."

I have never heard that before, either. Ever since I started interviewing people for ... newspapers... I have always asked this question and always get unique responses.............

thanks so much.

BARBARY: If you had your life to do over again, what, if anything would you change? My question is basically - - would you have written more poetry? Or?...
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:18pm UTC
I would change almost everything. The answer expected?

For me a poetry won't appear before its time. So I'm probably right on schedule.
Kathryn Flynn Apr 7, 2011, 9:28pm UTC
Wow, Barbary, I have NEVER heard that before..... So, I didn't expect it....

"For me a poetry won't appear before its time. So I'm probably right on schedule. "

Wow. That is beautiful....
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:55pm UTC
Sounds like wine or cheese, and why shouldn't it? All three involve care, timing, quality control, and the goal of releasing only those of which you can be proud.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:24pm UTC
I'm smiling, John.

Connie, please take my name out of the hat if there is a book being given away. I have already won one, and that is enough. I have read that Estuary at least a hundred times, and enjoyed every single one of those times, so that's not it. It is the fact I already won a copy and it should be someone else's turn.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 8:33pm UTC
Lynn,

There is not going to be a book given away tonight. This chat is purely for pleasure. Grab a mug of cocoa, a stick to roast marshmallows with, a chair and we will sit around the campfire and listen to John and Barbary recite poetry to us all night. :)

Susan Budig - Mindful Poet Apr 7, 2011, 8:36pm UTC
Today I was the Toastmaster at my Club's meeting. My theme was Poem-in-your-Pocket. I brought over two dozen poetry books with me so that I and others could read from them. One of those books was Estuary by Barbary Chaapel. :-)

Barbary--do you find, with the changing technology, that publishing is different than it used to be? If so, in what way?

John--do you hope to take your poetry beyond publishing on Gather?
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 8:45pm UTC
Susan,

Isn't the 14th Poem in your pocket day? That sounds like so much fun. I have heard people on Gather say that poetry is a dying art. I disagree, I see it evolving beyond the traditional poetry but I see it growing none the less.
Susan Budig - Mindful Poet Apr 7, 2011, 8:54pm UTC
Absolutely right, Connie. Poem-in-your-Pocket Day is April 14th. I couldn't make that date at my Club meeting because I have work to do on that date for a client that isn't flexible. The work isn't flexible, that is, my client is wonderful. :-)

For that reason, I held my annual themed-Club meeting a week early.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:02pm UTC
Well I think it is great no matter what day you do it on. I love poetry and I am working hard to promote the poets in the Gather community.

I am waiting until after tomorrow to schedule anymore this month because of surgery thought.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:13pm UTC
Hi, Susan.
I have yet to decide whether or not I want to publish outside Gather. I had considered submitting to a small paper which is published in Door County and distributed free in businesses throughout the county in the tourist season.
Sheila Deeth Apr 7, 2011, 9:20pm UTC
Sounds a neat way to get your name out there.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:22pm UTC
Susan,

My life revolves around writing poetry. I don't like the rest of the process.

Yes, publishing is evolving. I could see this in the span of my 3 books.
Does one want to hold a book in hand? Or scroll?
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:23pm UTC
Hi, Sheila.
lynn a. Apr 7, 2011, 9:31pm UTC
Always I prefer a book in hand. The computer is great especially when eyes get tired because the size can be increased, but the computer is never going to give the satisfaction a book will give.

Hello John and Barbary (and Connie and everyone else)

Making National Poetry Month special in any way?

Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:00pm UTC
Hi Kati. I made it.
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
me too :)
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:14pm UTC
Hi, Katy & Veronica.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:23pm UTC
It is good that we celebrate.

Hello, Katryn and Veronica.
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:28pm UTC
Hello John and Barbary
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:29pm UTC
I'm doing Mindful Poetry's participation in National Poetry Month, Kati. She posts a new form and challenge daily, 5 days a week, for the month.
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:33pm UTC
We need to get Kati to do today's Prompt - a nonet on a Georgia O'Keeffe painting. My sister's good at mathematical poems.
Susan Budig - Mindful Poet Apr 7, 2011, 10:21pm UTC
Well, she still has an hour and a half to work one out. Mindful Poetry's next prompt goes up at midnight.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:35pm UTC
Katryn, I'm going to two special poetry events this month.
WV has an unusual number of people in the arts, so
there is always something great to attend. Inspiring.
lynn a. Apr 8, 2011, 11:08am UTC
I would love to be at those special poetry events. I would enjoy hearing the words and the voices.

Still here. Phone still not rung. Looking forward to your answers to the questions. (I'll blame my cold for me not being able to think to ask anything myself.)

Hey now you have got to cheer up. Read my comment below, this is a campfire poetry get-together. :) Not allowed to be sick.

I am going to do something tonight that I have never done at a live chat before. Here is what I want you to do.

Imagine we are all sitting around the campfire. WE are on rocks, broken down trees and lawn chairs.

We have hot chocolate to drink. There is a tea kettle on a rack in the campfire.

WE have sticks to roast marshmallows with.

Now we are all going to have a wonderful time chatting with John and Barbary in the glow of the campfire.

Can you imagine that (Just for tonight)?

I want you to smell the woods, feel the gentle breeze and the warmth of the campfire as you listen to the poems, you can hear the water gently flowing downstream in the river just in front of where were are sitting.

I want to bring back the togetherness that comes from campfires, stories and poetry, if only for one night.
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:03pm UTC
Who's going to get outsmored? The girl scout encampment theme this year was Survivor camp marapai the patch read - Outscout Outcraft Outsmore
Sheila Deeth Apr 7, 2011, 9:03pm UTC
But I'm scared of fire and I'll end up feeling cold and sitting at the back. Maybe I can pretend to be someone else.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:05pm UTC
Shelia,

I brought blankets. :) I will sit in the back with you. :)
Sheila Deeth Apr 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
Aw, thanks.
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:14pm UTC
I leave two miles from Chocolate World in Hershey, PA so I'll bring the chocolate for the s'mores ;)
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:15pm UTC
Then there's the campfire phenomenon: the smoke always blows in your direction regardless of where you stand or sit.
Sheila Deeth Apr 7, 2011, 9:21pm UTC
Just as long as the sparks don't blow. And don't ask me to look at anyone who's standing too close to the flame.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:31pm UTC
Yum. Hershey's Chocolate!

Hello Connie, Barbary & John!
I applaud this author chat for having the opportunity to read poetry from two great people.
I'm here drinking my Coke Zero just finished watching America IDol ( learning voting does matter the most in staying in the competition).
Now I'm in the mood for great conversations with everyone.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:07pm UTC
Do you dabble in poetry yourself?
Darlene B. Apr 7, 2011, 9:12pm UTC
Hi Connie!
No I do not make it a point to dabble in poetry. I know the last time I wrote a poem was for high school in an English class. Today, I have no idea what I wrote.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
Welcome, Voice.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:23pm UTC
I took a spell dabbling in poetry in High school as well but was never any good at it. I enjoy hearing it read though
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:34pm UTC
Great moniker, Voice of A Woman. Sounds like a poem title.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:38pm UTC
Say, do we have to read our poems aloud tonight?

This question is for any poet here who would like to answer. Anyone interested in retiring to Haiku, Hawaii not only great for poetry but also alliteration.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
Welcome Veronica,

I have noticed that John tends to spice his poetry up with just about any variety.
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
you trying to over populate it on us...I thought your plan was for us to retire there
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:11pm UTC
Yes I'm definitely going there but we have to have good neighbors right?
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:13pm UTC
perhaps we can write some poems while we are camper roomies later this month ;)
Granny Janny Apr 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
I had no idea that there was a Haiku in Hawaii...I'll have to go and see what it's like there.
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
It's April I'll be writing yes. Don't wake me up too early though your 9AM is my 6AM remember
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:19pm UTC
Here are some pictures
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:21pm UTC
well, good thing I won't be in till 11pm or midnight, will only be about 6pm your time ;)

I am making plans for lunch with Beth while we hide out on Tuesday to celebrate her birthday since it's the next day anyway

I think we may just have to get up around 5am for that ;)
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:22pm UTC
can we retire in his house?
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:26pm UTC
I know it's nice isn't it?
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:35pm UTC
I don't think he'll be there once we retire...

Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:29pm UTC
yeah,

"George Washington Bridge,
George Washington Bridge,
Washington, Washington, Washington, Washington,
George Washington Bridge"

no idea how to describe the tune...I'll see if I can find it
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:32pm UTC
Well, here's a version, but not the one I learned, similar though
Granny Janny Apr 7, 2011, 9:38pm UTC

John,

I have noticed that you can write just about any kind of poem. What is your secret to shifting gears so rapidly?
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:20pm UTC
It's all about my coach, Susan Budig. Some of the forms she's taught me:

Haiku
Villanelle
Pantoum
Cinquain
Rubaiyat
Decastich
Acrostic
List poem
Kyrielle
Rondeau
Sestina
Tritina
Parallelismus membrorum
Than bauk
Terza rima
Abecedarian
Fibonacci poem
Triolet
Nonnet
Dramatic monologue
Ghazal
Luc bat

I just read up about them and then try my hand, sometimes successfully and sometimes I learn what I've done wrong.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:21pm UTC
Wow John,

ARE ALL OF THOSE DIFFERENT TYPES OF POETRY?

I HAD NO IDEA!!!

NOW I HAVE TO DO MORE RESEARCH! YOU JUST WANT TO KEEP ME BUSY DON'T YOU?
Sheila Deeth Apr 7, 2011, 9:23pm UTC
What a great list. I have much to learn.
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:24pm UTC
I love learning new forms from Susan :)
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:24pm UTC
Connie, John's right. You want to know how many different forms of poetry are out there? Check out Susan's Mindful Poetry group
Katryn D. Apr 7, 2011, 9:26pm UTC

Barbary,

If I remember right, you were living on a boat for one of your books. What is your inspiration for the poetry you are currently writing.

Did you remove some of your poems from Gather?

I looked and could not find many to spotlight in this post.

Should we be directed to your blog instead?

You are not planning on leaving Gather all together are you?
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:43pm UTC
I seem to be stuck on nature-metaphysical writing.
I plan a break-out soon!

After a week or two I remove poems I may want to publish in a book.

There should have been 4 published on Gather from Estuary.

Goodness, I couldn't leave Gather. So many wonderful friends here.
Granny Janny Apr 7, 2011, 11:02pm UTC

Hi Barbary and John, I can't believe I actually made a chat, so happy it is with the two of you. John, I love your poetry, it is usually soft and gentle, tells me a lot about you, do you work on them for a long time or do they just come into your head? Barbary, I love reading your poetry too, wonderful that you have three books published, did you write a lot of poems, such as in a collection and then put them together, or just chose from those you thought most of?
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:22pm UTC
As I commented to Kathryn, Elsie, some of the poems seem to almost write themselves. On the other hand there are some where I struggle.
Sheila Deeth Apr 7, 2011, 9:24pm UTC
Silly question then. Do you find yourself more satisfied with those that write themselves, or with those you struggle with? Or doesn't it make a difference?
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:24pm UTC
Welcome Elsie,

It is so good to see you.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:37pm UTC
That's a hard question for me to answer, Sheila. I guess it depends more upon the "finished product" than the effort. If I write an epic poem, I tend to edit it over and over until I'm totally satisfied. But I really like some that just roll off the keyboard.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:48pm UTC
Elsie,

In each poetry book I chose about 50 from a 100 poems written.

I divided the sections with "like" poems in each.

Are you writing a book...hope so!
Elsie Duggan Apr 7, 2011, 10:47pm UTC
I am thinking about it, now and then.

This question is for both John and Barbary

Can you just sit around a campfire and close your mind to the sounds, scents, and feel of nature, then make up a poem about it on a whim?
Sheila Deeth Apr 7, 2011, 9:31pm UTC
Can't put me near a fire and close my mind. There's flames. They're hot. They're scary.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:35pm UTC
I will protect you Shelia, I love to camp and sit by the campfire all night long listening to stories.
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:42pm UTC
Poets share their voice
Sitting round a campfire
Brightening our day
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:50pm UTC
Mood is everything.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:52pm UTC
Scent is a very provocative poem maker, as is music.

Connie C. Apr 9, 2011, 3:44pm UTC
Barbary,

When I was a teen, I dabbled in poetry and sketching. I would take my sketch pad to the woods. There was an amazing mossy area about a half mile into the woods and I loved to just lay there and sketch or write poetry. The scent of nature has always evoked my mind to the simple things in life.

The sights, sounds and scents of nature has an amazing effect on my mind.

Hey Cathi,

Welcome. It is good to see you. Did I read in one of John's recent posts that he had met you in person or did I dream that?
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:47pm UTC
That was in jest. It was a Genre Shortie and I told of birding with Vivian and Cathi, neither of whom I have met in person. I would love to, though. Vivian has been away with family matters but I saw a post from her today. I don't think she ever saw the story of the 3 of us.

Barbary,

Do you tend to write poetry from all the varieties that exist?

Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:54pm UTC
I prefer free style. It allows me the most expansion, the ability to get messy emotions in there. Except for my nature poems, of course.

lynn a. Apr 7, 2011, 10:20pm UTC
Barbary, this is something I really want to know.

The words you use, and the way you put them together....is this a particular style, or how did you come to say what you say the way you said it? Did you learn in your poetry class to do this or is this a natural speech of yours? The words you use in poetry, are you also likely to use them in daily life?
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:55pm UTC
Lynn,

I believe I just write - the way I think - maybe it is the way I talk, too.

In poetry classes appreciation was taught, sentences parsed, critiqued - those were the main subjects covered.

Did I answer your question?

lynn a. Apr 8, 2011, 11:21am UTC
Yes, I believe as much as possible. But if you don't mind, I would like to get my copy of Estuary and cite a few examples. I don't really know how to ask what the question is, for one thing, if there's a word for it, I've never heard it, if it's a method, I've never heard of that either, but it's the way you take words and sometimes put them together that then turns them magical. Or they take on such a dramatic strength that the words fly at the reader with a strength or some profound statement.

Cathi,

Do you write poetry?
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:40pm UTC
I'm trying to think, Cathi. I did write about responsibility toward a pet dog in a poem here on Gather some time ago, but I don't recall if I had Reykur yet or not. I guess it would surprise me if he had not inspired a poem from me yet, but I can't put my finger on one now.

camp song...to the tune of the old gray mare...
Here we sit like birds in the wilderness
birds in the wilderness
birds in the wilderness
Here we sit like birds in the wilderness
Waiting for Barbary to come
Waiting for Barbary to come
Waiting for Barbary to come
Here we sit like Birds in the wilderness
Waiting for Barbary to come...
Now all together one, two three....

I just now went back and counted the "kinds" of poetry that John listed. There were 22 different kind. When I was growing up, it seems that poetry rhymed and I know these do not so my question is this:

When did poetry evolve into something other than a rhyme?

Has it been evolving more over the last few years or am I older than I thought I was?
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:42pm UTC
Some of these forms, Connie, are from different cultures and were not commonly known except by those familiar with the cultures or different poetry forms. Some of those forms, the the haiku and sinquain, are becoming increasingly popular.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:44pm UTC
I have so much to learn. It is a never ending process of learning.

John,

Are your poems published anywhere beside on Gather?
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:42pm UTC
Not so far, Connie.
Veronica Hosking Apr 7, 2011, 9:50pm UTC
Not true , John. Kimberly's blog is not gather. ;)
Connie C. Apr 9, 2011, 3:37pm UTC
John,

Are you considering publishing a book of poetry?

John or Barbary, have you ever entered a poetry contest? If yes did you win? If , no would you encourage new poets to enter?
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:43pm UTC
I think some of Barbary's poems have won awards.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 9:44pm UTC
The only contests I've entered were here on Gather. Interesting that you should ask. A sonnet which I wrote was just chosen Poem of the Day on the Mindful Poetry contest.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:59pm UTC
Yes, I won WV Writers Poetry Contest. And used the money to buy two Wyeth prints, then wrote poems about them.

Definitely, enter contests. Lots of them. Especially the ones with no fees.

If any of you have the opportunity, I suggest you go to Barabry's blog and read the poems she has up for viewing. She wrote a poem about the Sago mine tragedy that brought tears to my eyes. She lives just a couple counties away from me. We both knew men who died in that mine.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:42pm UTC
The link to her blog is in the above post.

Even though we only live a couple counties apart, we have never met in person.
lynn a. Apr 7, 2011, 9:50pm UTC
Oh, Connie, her poem about Sago caused the same reaction in me. I have read her poems so many times that many of them are close to being commited to memory. A word here, a word there, and I can go so many more lines.

I sent her book, Estuary, to 2 friends and they loved it.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:01pm UTC
Thank you, Connie and Lynn, for those kind words.

One of my first Gather posts was a citizen report of Sago.
Connie C. Apr 9, 2011, 3:36pm UTC
Barbary,

I set glued to the TV during the entire ordeal at SAGO. I was never so disappointed in The CNN reporter. He is the one that spread the rumor that they were alive. I saw it was it was happening. I have never trusted him after that. I refuse to watch him on CNN. He did not verify his words before he repeated them over and over.

I hear an owl hooting in the trees, now there are two. Must be saying poetry to each the other..
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:44pm UTC
Welcome Larry,

You must love the outdoors too. :)
Granny Janny Apr 7, 2011, 9:45pm UTC
Actually they came to see who was singing those funny songs...
Larry H. Apr 7, 2011, 9:47pm UTC

Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:01pm UTC

Thanks for posting songs, Jan.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:05pm UTC
Say,we aren't camped near any bogs, are we, Connie?
Connie C. Apr 9, 2011, 3:32pm UTC
LOL Barbary,

I don't know why but I was in the mood for a campfire chat tonight. LOL The owl would have been too scared to dare make a noise with this group of gather members anyway. LOL

Hi Connie,

Have never looked into one of these chats before, but I saw that Barbary Chaapel's, Bad Boys, was going to be discussed, so I thought I'd check it out. (Anyway, I thought I'd let you know I was here.) Hope all is well. Take care. :)
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:45pm UTC
Welcome Sue,

Barbary is around here somewhere but we can't find her. She was here and now she is gone.
Connie C. Apr 7, 2011, 9:46pm UTC
Sue,

You can leave Barbary a question about her poem and she will answer it when she gets down here.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:06pm UTC
I feel like I'm in Bizarro Land.

I really do keep answering and it posts.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:12pm UTC
Sue,

Yes, please ask here or send me Gather mail. I'll be happy to answer.
Sue B.© The Sting IS Worse Than the Buzz Apr 7, 2011, 10:36pm UTC
Thank you, Barbary, I really didn't have any particular question in mind. I happened to see that Connie was going to have this chat and read the poem. Then I forgot about it and only happened to see a comment here on Gather's "real-time" page. It was late by then and I looked for some discussion about it. At that point, it looked as though you had left.

It's a lovely poem, and not wanting the kind of man who would spread his coat across a puddle for you resonated with me. I love the way you ended it. Also brought back a lot of memories of when I used to listen to Phoebe Snow.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 11:03pm UTC
Ahhh, someone else who listened to the vintage Phoebe. I love both her and Cleo Laine.

The photo with my poem is, of course, my husband, the original bad boy. :)

Both books of poetry question relationships. It is a favorite topic, and I try to write with honesty and candor.

So nice to chat with you here, Sue.
Connie C. Apr 9, 2011, 3:30pm UTC
Sue & Barbary,

Ya know the mannerism of men have changed over the years. I mean it is so cool to watch teenage girls as they see my husband gently guide me across the parking lot and then open my door for me.

I wonder when men quit respecting women as they once did. I am blessed with a man who still respects me as a woman. It makes me feel special.

Ladies & Gentlemen,

There are only 5 minutes left in this chat. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for attending. Thanks for all your questions. Hope each of you have a wonderful night.
lynn a. Apr 7, 2011, 9:52pm UTC
One thing I am noticing here is that each time I go to the top to find where Barbary or John have answered, I am finding more of their responses, so maybe this is a lesson that if we want to know everything they said, we need to read again after the chat stops.

This sure did fly by.
Granny Janny Apr 7, 2011, 9:57pm UTC
You're right, Lynn. I have a feeling there will be more posts after the time limit.
lynn a. Apr 7, 2011, 10:09pm UTC
Granny Janny, even this last sweep down I found 3 or 4 more comments by John or Barbary that I don't remember from the time before.

This was a good chat.

Two very kind people.
Barbary C. Apr 7, 2011, 10:13pm UTC
We started answering from the top down.

Thanks, Jan and Lynn. I loved seeing you here.
Connie C. Apr 9, 2011, 3:27pm UTC
Lynn, Granny Janny and Barbary,

It is always great to be in the middle of the chats for various reasongs. Then to come back the next day and read the transcript. If you just read the transcript, you miss the "action and thrill of it all."

These live chats have really increased in popularity over over the last year. I have been hosting them since the Jan 2010 and I can see how musth people are enjoying them while they are occuring. But like you said, it is also a great benefit to reading the transcripst.

You can show your gratitude to Brenda by purchasing her books and asking your local library to order them for you as well.

You can always help the authors in these chats by purchasing their book or by asking your local library to get them for you. I am sure the authors will appreciate it.

Barbary has three books publisehd. You can reall about them in the above post.

I feel confident that John will have a book out. I do now know if he is working on one of now but he has the talent and I feel certain he will find that his talent can be shared by publishing.

I need to leave a bit early tonight. I have to go the hospital. My husband just came to get me. Have a wonderful night.

I will be out of town all day tomorrow getting my Pre-Op done.
Granny Janny Apr 7, 2011, 10:00pm UTC
Be well, Connie. And thanks to Barbary and John for being present and answering all the questions. It was fun.
JOHN BECK Apr 7, 2011, 10:04pm UTC
Thanks for coming, Janny.
Marge H. Apr 7, 2011, 10:05pm UTC
